The City of Albuquerque Open Space Division is excited to announce the opening of the new GEM inclusive sensory trail on July 8, 2025, at the Tijeras Bio-Zone Education Center located at 15600 Central Ave. SE. Ciudad Soil and Water Conservation District (CIUDAD SWCD) secured an Outdoor Recreation and Trails+ Grant from the New Mexico Economic Development Department's Outdoor Recreation Division, with support from the City for the required matching funds. In collaboration with Hero’s Path Palliative Care, Nature Matters Academy, and other partners, a one-of-a-kind trail has been constructed for people of all abilities. The trail, which exceeds typical ADA Standards, features activity stations, interpretive signage, and elevated challenges to cater to a variety of needs.  This trail also serves as a model for other local and state properties that will enhance the community, provide equitable access to outdoor recreation, and provide opportunities for people of all abilities to explore nature together.

In conjunction with the trail construction, CIUDAD SWCD and the City’s Open Space Division have implemented stream restoration along the riparian zone and surrounding uplands, including the installation of a Zuni Bowl, a basin, and various check dams to slow and filter the water coming off of a stormwater outfall from Route 66 into the site. The City has also constructed a trail that extends throughout the Tijeras Creek and up to Four-Hills Manzano Open Space.
